Linda Vargas

Dearest Joan,

It has been said many times, that when the student is ready the master will appear. You have indeed been my master throughout my journey for my Masters degree.  I now know, that I was ready for you to appear in my life when (at a chance meeting over dinner ) you so graciously asked me to tell me about my study and you told me to Google “living theory”. At this point, my academic journey took a left turn. Your incredible capacity as a scholar, a teacher and mentor became an inspiration to me to push my limits once more. Your enlightened thinking became a beacon of hope, in what was fast becoming  the dark and lonely tunnel of academia.

You provided me with the space, (our never to be missed Friday sessions), where you encouraged me to  ‘find my voice’ in the company of others who I now consider to be cherished friends. When I faltered, through lack of self belief, you encouraged me to “just go and do it” and when I lost my way or my momentum, you encouraged me to persevere, by reminding me that “there is no such thing as good writing, only good re-writing”. I thank you for your respect and love of knowledge as well as your capacity to challenge any thinking no matter how ‘sacred’, or time held it may seem.

I will never be able to put into two dimensional text how I feel about my multi-dimensional and ‘holistic’ experience with you. Perhaps if I were to dance it, I may come closer .....

What I do know, is that with you, I have had the rare privilege of being guided by a master and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

THE MASTER
The Master in the Art makes little distinction between
his work and his play,
his labour and his leisure,
his mind and his body,
his love and his belief.
He hardly knows which is which.
He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does,
leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing.
To him he’s always doing both.
(author unknown).

With my love,
Linda.
