Dear Joan, Since meeting you by chance at the Ubuntu Centre in Cape Town we have been inspired by your life-affirming energy, values, passion for her students and their learning, writings, and your wonderful capacity to gather people together to share their ideas and to take their enquiries forward. The picture is of you presenting a paper at an international conference in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. You are explaining the significance of research at Durban University of Technology in relation to Making Knowledge Useful. You have been a great ambassador for DUT, its research-base, its teaching and the students. We are smiling as we write as we respond to your warmth and openness in the picture and it evokes the attraction and pleasure that you have brought into our lives. Thank you Joan.
As lead investigator for the Transformative Education/al Studies Project you have been most influential in designing a project which is destined for global significance in educational research communities around the world. As you say, in this project educators and postgraduate students in Higher Education are reflecting critically on their learning, teaching, assessment, curriculum and educational professional practice in a variety of ways with the multiple benefits of improving the quality of their practice, earning the award of a senior degree and earning research outputs in the form of publications. This highlights your passionate commitment to enhancing the research capacity at DUT and in the wider educational communities.
Here’s wishing you a very happy and productive future. Like our ‘non-retirements’ we believe that we will be sharing ideas and working with you for many years to come.
With Love from Jack and Joan Whitehead
